Established as a national qualification system for lifeguards in July 2015, the lifeguard qualification is granted by the Chief of the Maritime Police Agency to those recognized as having professional abilities to rescue people in distress in the water, according to the Act on Search and Rescue at Sea.
For this qualification exam, 25 candidates who completed 64 hours of preliminary training (16 hours of theory and 48 hours of practice) at 30 educational institutions designated by the Maritime Police Agency applied.
The practical exam subjects include seven areas: ▲ swimming techniques (underwater swimming, head-up freestyle, breaststroke, trudgen) ▲ swimming rescue ▲ equipment rescue ▲ basic rescue ▲ comprehensive rescue ▲ first aid ▲ equipment skills. Candidates must score an average of 60 points out of 100 and at least 40% of the full score in each subject to pass.
Those who obtain the lifeguard qualification can work as lifeguards or safety management personnel at beaches, swimming pools, and water leisure businesses.
They can also work as water safety education instructors at designated educational institutions and join private maritime rescue teams affiliated with each maritime police station.
This year, the lifeguard qualification exam in the Jeju area is planned to be held four times in total, with the next exam scheduled for June 25.
A Jeju Maritime Police Agency official said, "We will conduct a fair exam under thorough quarantine measures to prevent COVID-19 infection," and added, "We will continue to strive to nurture and produce excellent rescue professionals to contribute to reducing casualties in the water and protecting the lives of the public."
