[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Jeonnam Province announced on the 21st that a total of 29 new project start and basic survey districts covering an area of 3,572 hectares have been confirmed as targets for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' '2022 Drainage Improvement Project,' securing the largest number nationwide for the fourth consecutive year.

The drainage improvement project targets lowland farmland areas of 50 hectares or more that have repeatedly suffered flooding damage due to typhoons and heavy rains. It is fully funded by the national government to install drainage pumps, sluice gates, and drainage channels to prepare for disasters and prevent crop damage.

Jeonnam Province secured 14 districts (1,554 hectares) out of 61 new project start districts nationwide and 15 districts (2,018 hectares) out of 69 basic survey districts nationwide. This is an increase of 10 districts compared to last year.

The project budget for the 29 districts is 155 billion KRW for new project starts and 166.3 billion KRW for basic surveys, totaling 321.3 billion KRW.

The 14 new project start districts are ▲ Naju Wolsong ▲ Gwangyang Songgeum and Osa ▲ Damyang Eungyong ▲ Goheung Gangsan ▲ Boseong Dogae ▲ Hwasun Deokgok ▲ Haenam Oho ▲ Yeongam Pyeongri ▲ Muan Yanggok ▲ Hampyeong Hakgyo ▲ Jangseong Sinheung and Yongjeong ▲ Wando Samsan districts. After conducting status surveys and gathering local residents' opinions this year, detailed designs will be completed, construction will begin in 2023, and the work is planned to be completed by 2025.

The 15 basic survey districts are ▲ Naju Seji ▲ Boseong Deoksan ▲ Gangjin Mandeok ▲ Haenam Gocheonam 3 ▲ Yeongam Dokcheon, Geumgang, Taebaek, Pyeongri ▲ Muan Cheongmang, Geumsan 2 ▲ Hampyeong Jedong ▲ Yeonggwang Hasa ▲ Jangseong Uchi, Yongjeong ▲ Wando Sedong ▲ Jindo Goya districts. This year, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will establish the basic plan, and detailed design will be promoted from 2023.

Once the drainage improvement project is completed, flooding damage to crops will be fundamentally resolved, enabling stable farming to continue.

A Jeonnam Province official said, "To proactively respond to climate change, we will continuously improve agricultural infrastructure and focus our capabilities on disaster damage prevention projects."

Jeonnam Province secured 84.7 billion KRW this year for the continuation of the drainage improvement project from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the largest amount ever and the highest nationwide. Projects are underway in 34 districts across 18 cities and counties including Naju City, and construction of key management facilities such as drainage pump stations and drainage channels will be completed before the rainy season.
