‘Preventing Debt Inheritance’ Chungnam Provides Legal Support for Children and Adolescents

[Asia Economy (Hongseong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Chungnam Province announced on the 21st that, together with the Chungnam Youth Promotion Foundation, it will provide free legal consultations to local children and adolescents facing difficulties due to debt inheritance.

The debt inheritance prevention project aims to support children and adolescents under the age of 24 residing in the region by enabling them to receive legal consultations to avoid hardships caused by inherited debts.

The legal services available through the project include free litigation representation, support for legal procedures such as filing for renunciation of inheritance and limited approval, and assistance in requesting the appointment of a minor guardian when there is no protector.

Debt inheritance is determined by law according to the order of inheritance. For example, if a parent dies or a higher-priority heir renounces inheritance, a lower-priority heir (such as a child) may inherit both assets and debts, resulting in debt being passed down without the heir’s knowledge.

To prevent such situations and protect children and adolescents, the province enacted the “Ordinance on Legal Support for Inherited Debts of Children and Adolescents in the Province” in April last year.

A provincial official stated, “Attention from those around can protect our youth from crisis,” and added, “Please show interest so that young people in difficult situations can receive legal support services.”
