[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office announced on the 21st that it is actively supporting the establishment of hydrogen charging stations to promote the hydrogen economy and accelerate the popularization of hydrogen vehicles in the region, resulting in the opening of three hydrogen charging stations.

In the jurisdiction of the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office, there are currently 12 hydrogen charging stations operating in the Gwangju and Jeonnam areas, with a total of 1,359 hydrogen vehicles in operation.

This year, 2,671 hydrogen vehicles (2,650 passenger cars and 21 buses) are planned to be distributed in the jurisdiction area, making the expansion of charging stations even more urgent when added to the existing hydrogen vehicles in operation.

Accordingly, considering the status of hydrogen vehicle distribution, balanced allocation by region, and charging convenience, hydrogen charging stations are being established not only in the Gwangju and Jeonnam areas but also in Jeju and Gyeongnam (Namhae).

Currently, a total of 25 charging stations are being promoted: 16 stations scheduled for completion in 2022 (2 in Gwangju, 12 in Jeonnam, 2 in Jeju) and 9 stations scheduled for completion in 2023 (2 in Gwangju, 3 in Jeonnam, 2 in Jeju, 2 in Namhae).

Once the 25 charging stations are established, they will connect major cities* in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions and expand infrastructure at major tourist destinations**, greatly improving the convenience for hydrogen vehicle users.

In particular, special-purpose charging stations are being established in some areas such as Gwangju, Jeonnam (Yeosu, Gwangyang, Suncheon), and Jeju, laying the foundation for expanding the distribution of commercial vehicles such as hydrogen buses and freight trucks.

Furthermore, for some cities and counties where there are no plans to build charging stations yet, joint surveys of candidate sites for charging stations are being conducted together with the relevant local governments to continuously encourage the establishment of charging stations.

Kim Seung-hee, head of the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office, said, “As the demand for low-emission vehicles continues to increase, we will put more effort into accelerating infrastructure expansion,” and added, “We will do our best to advance the establishment schedule of hydrogen charging stations by closely cooperating with related organizations so that local residents do not experience inconvenience when using hydrogen vehicles.”
