[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] The Gyeongsangnam-do Youth Monthly Rent Support Project, eagerly awaited by independent young adults, will be implemented again this year.

The Gyeongsangnam-do Youth Monthly Rent Support Project has been in operation since last year to reduce the housing cost burden on youth so they can focus on their studies and livelihoods.

Last year, Gyeongnam Province supported monthly rent totaling 1.88 billion KRW for 1,424 young residents in the province. This year, the project will be carried out with a total budget of 1.6 billion KRW, consisting of 800 million KRW from the provincial government and 800 million KRW from city and county governments.

Through this project, young people aged 19 to 34 who live separately from their parents and do not own a home will receive up to 150,000 KRW per month for 10 months, limited to once in their lifetime.

Applicants must have a monthly income exceeding 1,167,000 KRW (60% of the median income) but not exceeding 2,917,000 KRW (150% of the median income), live in housing with monthly rent of 600,000 KRW or less, and a deposit of 100 million KRW or less.

Those who own a house, rent a family-owned house, are government or local government officials, live in public rental housing, or are already receiving youth housing support from the government or local authorities are not eligible.

Eligible youth can check the application period on the representative websites of each city or county, then visit their local town, township, or neighborhood office in person to submit the required documents, or apply online through the Gyeongnam Baro Service system.

Final selections will be announced after income verification and qualification checks according to each city or county’s schedule, and applicants can receive support retroactively from rent paid starting February.

An official from the province stated, “Application eligibility and periods may vary depending on city or county ordinances and conditions. Please be sure to individually check detailed schedules and information on the representative websites of the respective cities or counties where you are registered.”

Separately from this project, the province plans to implement the government-led Youth Monthly Rent Temporary Special Support Project in the second half of this year.

This support targets youth with incomes at or below 60% of the median income, living in housing with monthly rent of 600,000 KRW or less and deposits of 50 million KRW or less, providing 200,000 KRW monthly for 12 months as a one-time housing cost support.

According to the province, even if a youth’s income is below 60% of the median income, if they do not meet the income, asset, and residency requirements of the government-led Youth Monthly Rent Temporary Special Support Project, they can apply for the Gyeongsangnam-do Monthly Rent Support Project.

For more details, inquiries can be made to the provincial government’s Architecture and Housing Division or the youth policy departments of each city or county. Detailed schedules and the status of project departments by city or county can also be checked on the Gyeongsangnam-do Customized Housing Support Platform.

Heo Dongsik, Director of the Urban Transportation Bureau, said, “We hope that young people living in Gyeongnam can reduce their economic burdens and settle stably in the region. We will discover various policies that many young people can feel and create better living conditions.”
