[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Gyeongbuk Province has secured 133 billion KRW in national funds for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' drainage improvement project to prevent farmland flooding damage caused by typhoons and heavy rains, selecting 7 new project sites and 6 basic survey sites.
This amount is the highest ever, increasing by 23.6 billion KRW from last year, when the project budget first exceeded 100 billion KRW since the drainage improvement project began in 1975.
Once this project is completed, it will fundamentally resolve crop flooding damage and provide a stable farming environment.
The drainage improvement project installs drainage facilities such as pumping stations, drainage gates, and drainage channels on farmlands that suffer flooding damage during floods, preventing crop flooding damage and creating a foundation for cultivating other crops in rice paddies.
The newly selected project sites include 7 districts such as Pohang Naepyeong District, covering a total of 519 hectares with 77.5 billion KRW in national funds. After detailed design this year, full-scale construction will begin next year and is scheduled to be completed in 2025.
The 6 basic survey target districts, including Andong Angyo District, cover a total of 631 hectares with a project budget of 55.5 billion KRW in national funds. After establishing a basic plan reflecting the field conditions of the beneficiary areas, they will be selected as new project sites in the future.
The province is currently promoting the drainage improvement project with an investment of 90.7 billion KRW for 11 districts covering 866 hectares, including Gimcheon Hodong District.
Kim Jongsu, Director of the Agriculture, Livestock and Distribution Bureau of Gyeongbuk Province, said, “With this project selection, the farming inconveniences of local residents caused by farmland flooding will be greatly alleviated. It is expected to play a significant role in increasing farm income by enabling the cultivation of various crops such as greenhouses and horticultural crops in rice paddies.”
