[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 21st that it will extend the application period for the "Emergency Living Expenses," which provides 500,000 KRW in cash to special-type workers (teukgo) and freelancers facing economic difficulties due to COVID-19, until May 22. During the extension period, applications will only be accepted online.

The recipients of this emergency living expense support are teukgo and freelancers who received the Ministry of Employment and Labor's "5th Emergency Employment Stability Support Fund" in March and whose registered address as of the announcement date is in Seoul. The support amount is 500,000 KRW per person and will be deposited into the applicant's bank account within 7 days after application.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government stated that to ensure prompt payment, once necessary information such as the applicant's residence is verified, payments will be made sequentially without screening, as a small but quick measure to help alleviate the economic difficulties of teukgo and freelancers.

Additionally, for new recipients who receive the Ministry of Employment and Labor's 5th Emergency Employment Stability Support Fund for the first time in May, online applications will be accepted using the same method from 9 a.m. on May 23, when the Ministry's support fund deposit is completed, until midnight on June 12. The period for on-site applications (including reception locations by autonomous districts) will be announced later.

Jang Young-min, Seoul's Labor Policy Officer, said, "We hope that teukgo and freelancers who missed the application period for various reasons will not forget to apply by the 22nd of next month. If there are difficulties in applying, they can contact the Teukgo and Freelancer Emergency Living Expenses Review and Counseling Center, where the application process will be explained in an easy-to-understand manner." He added, "Seoul will strive to ensure prompt payment to teukgo and freelancers facing livelihood difficulties."
