[Wando=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] Jeonnam Wando-gun announced on the 20th that the early-ripening loquat, a subtropical fruit crop, which has been cultivated since last month, is receiving great responses from consumers.
Most loquats are grown outdoors and harvested from June to July, but house-grown loquats have been carefully managed for temperature and other factors since last winter, allowing for shipments at least two months earlier and distribution through various channels.
The county began cultivating loquats in earnest in 2010, and currently, 114 farms (35 hectares) are cultivating them.
Last year, 126 tons were produced, and this year's expected production is 130 tons.
Wando loquats have an average sugar content of 13 Brix, are juicy, and have a delicious sweet and sour taste.
There is a saying that "there is no sick person in a household where loquat trees grow," reflecting that loquats are a well-being food with various health benefits.
In particular, they are rich in polyphenols, beta-carotene, vitamin A, and potassium, which are known to help prevent adult diseases and regulate blood pressure.
The leaves help improve immunity, prevent skin aging, and protect against tooth decay.
The "Compendium of Materia Medica" records that loquats quench thirst, regulate lung qi, relieve alcohol poisoning, stop vomiting and nausea, treat postpartum dry mouth, and that drinking boiled loquat juice is effective for diabetes.
A county official said, "Loquats can be enjoyed not only as fruit but also as concentrated juice, leaf tea, wine, vinegar, and more," adding, "We hope everyone tries the delicious and healthy Wando loquats."
