[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Lee Bu-young, chairman of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, who was imprisoned during the military regime for holding a press conference in violation of a proclamation order, has been acquitted in a retrial held 42 years later and will receive criminal compensation of approximately 170 million won.
According to the legal community on the 20th, the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 51 (Chief Presiding Judge Ko Yeon-geum) decided that the state shall pay criminal compensation of 170,982,400 won to Chairman Lee, whose acquittal was confirmed in the retrial.
Chairman Lee, a dismissed reporter from Dong-A Ilbo, was sentenced to three years in prison and served his sentence for holding a press conference at the former President Yun Bo-seon’s residence on November 13, 1979, one month after the death of former President Park Chung-hee, demanding the lifting of emergency measures and the guarantee of press freedom. The retrial court acquitted him in August last year.
