[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] The organizing committee of the 2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo announced on the 20th that a D-365 commemorative event will be held on the 23rd at Suncheonman National Garden and Suncheonman Dalbam Night Market, marking one year before the opening.

This event, promoted for nationwide public relations and pre-buzz one year ahead of the 2023 Garden Expo, will be filled with various meaningful events beyond simple activities.

First, at 1 PM on the National Garden lawn, the ‘D-365 Commemorative National Children's Drawing Contest’ will take place.

With the theme ‘The Garden I Dream Of,’ about 300 elementary school students nationwide will participate, and a total of 80 outstanding works will be selected and awarded.

The winning works will be used in various promotional videos such as on YouTube and in card news production.

From around 4 PM, to mark the 3rd anniversary of the passing of the designer of the landmark Lake Garden in Suncheonman National Garden, the late Charles Jencks, his daughter Lily Jencks and the key figures of the 2013 Suncheonman International Garden Expo will gather to honor his achievements and look back on the preparation process of the 2013 Garden Expo in the ‘Charles Jencks Memorial Talk Concert.’

The tribute video, containing hidden stories about the birth of the National Garden and gratitude toward the late Charles Jencks, will offer a gentle emotional experience to citizens and visitors.

At the Suncheonman Dalbam Night Market, a ‘D-365 Commemorative Celebration’ will be held.

Starting with a pre-performance at Agora Suncheon at 6 PM, the official event will begin at 7 PM with key guests including Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, and Choi Byung-am, Director of the Korea Forest Service.

The official event will feature an opening musical performance in the form of a flash mob, the appointment of the 2023 Garden Expo promotional ambassadors, screening of congratulatory videos, followed by a candle lighting ceremony pledging the success of the expo, and will conclude with a contemporary dance performance fused with multimedia.

From 8 PM, top domestic singers such as Lee Chan-won, Norazo, Sohyang, and Yoyomi will perform celebratory concerts, beautifully illuminating the spring nights of Suncheon.

There is a rising excitement with numerous inquiries from fans and citizens nationwide.

Cheon Je-young, Secretary General of the Garden Expo Organizing Committee, said, “With the expo opening one year away and COVID-19 downgraded to a level 2 infectious disease, and social distancing fully lifted, it seems like a sign that the expo will be a great success,” adding, “We hope that citizens tired from COVID-19 will be comforted by this event and enjoy a joyful and pleasant time.”

Meanwhile, the 2023 Garden Expo, under the theme ‘Living in the Garden,’ will be held from April 22 to October 22 next year for six months, aiming for 8 million visitors, across Suncheonman National Garden, Suncheonman Wetland, Dongcheon, and downtown Suncheon.

Attractions include the Korean Peninsula Crater Garden, a 1/200 scale model of Baekdusan Cheonji and Hallasan Baengnokdam, the National Garden greenhouse botanical garden where visitors can experience over 450 species of rare plants, and the AIPH Future Garden featuring unique media art and an aqua garden with the latest trends only seen in Suncheon.

With the 2023 Garden Expo, Suncheon is expected to present a new paradigm of gardens by expanding gardens beyond Korea’s first national garden to every corner of the city, transforming the entire city into one vast garden, showcasing another miracle as Korea’s first garden city.
