According to Daegu city health authorities on the 20th, among the 12 new COVID-19 deaths reported as of midnight that day, one was confirmed to be an elementary school student in the lower grades.
The deceased student was found dead at home on the morning of the 19th and was confirmed positive after death.
Health authorities conducted diagnostic testing on the deceased and confirmed a positive result. The medical examiner's opinion also identified the cause of death as myocarditis due to COVID-19.
The deceased student had recently shown suspicious symptoms such as fever and was reported to have no underlying health conditions.
This is the first time a COVID-19 death under the age of 10 has been recorded among deaths in Daegu city.
It was reported that there is no record of medical treatment at a healthcare facility since the confirmation was made postmortem.
A Daegu health official stated, “The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency will conduct a detailed epidemiological investigation regarding the COVID-19 death.”
