[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Sung Kim, the U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy, who is currently visiting Korea, met with Park Jin, the nominee for Minister of Foreign Affairs, on the 20th.

According to Park's camp, Park reminded Representative Kim that an early South Korea-U.S. summit is planned following the inauguration of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, and emphasized the need to maintain close communication and cooperation from the very first day of the administration to ensure seamless coordination on North Korea policy between the two countries.

He also stressed that the recent series of missile launches by North Korea pose a serious threat not only to the safety of the Korean people but also to peace and stability in Northeast Asia and the international community. In light of the possibility of further provocations such as nuclear tests by North Korea, he emphasized the necessity for close cooperation between South Korea and the U.S.

Representative Kim expressed agreement with Park and emphasized that the Biden administration holds high expectations for close cooperation with the Yoon Seok-yeol government in advancing North Korea policy. He added that prioritizing close coordination with South Korea will be the foremost approach in their response.

On the morning of the 21st, Representative Kim will continue meetings with the new government's diplomatic and security team, including nominee for Minister of Unification Kwon Young-se and Kim Sung-han, the secretary of the foreign and security subcommittee of the transition committee.
