[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] As the global spread of K-content accelerates, the National Library of Korea has issued International Standard Name Identifiers (ISNI) to 40,312 creators affiliated with the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) and the Federation of Korean Music Performers (FKMP), and linked and shared data on approximately 937,000 music-related content items.

The International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) is a 16-digit international standard identification number assigned to public identities of individuals and organizations involved in creation, production, research, and performance fields such as literature, academia, music, film, and broadcasting.

The internationally standardized ISNI distinguishes numerous individuals with the same name, enabling accurate searches as well as copyright protection and international promotion of creators and their works. It also allows for inter-agency linkage and services of creator data at the national level without exposing personal information. Furthermore, by sharing creator and work information through the ISNI international organization, it contributes to securing global accessibility and promoting the use of content. For example, singer and actress IU can be identified, searched, and accessed at once for related creative works managed by domestic and international institutions such as the National Library of Korea, the Federation of Korean Music Performers, the Korean Film Council, MusicBrains, the U.S. Library of Congress, and Wikidata through ISNI 0000 0004 0681 4670.

For these reasons, global companies such as YouTube, Spotify, and Apple, as well as major national libraries in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, participate in the ISNI international organization. Since signing an agreement with the ISNI international organization in 2016, the National Library of Korea has formed the ISNI-KOREA consortium with 14 institutions including the Korea Music Copyright Association, the Federation of Korean Music Performers, the Korea Copyright Commission, and the Korean Film Council, operating as the Korean ISNI registration agency to issue and manage ISNIs for domestic creators.

A representative of the National Library of Korea stated, “The value of creator identification and rights protection is becoming increasingly important in the global digital environment. Going forward, the National Library of Korea plans to lead national-level data linkage and integration using ISNI, and to further promote and activate the use of excellent K-content, including K-pop, both domestically and internationally.”
