[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 20th that it will promote "Creating a Clean, Beautiful, and Distinctive Gwangju" as a year-round special policy to transform into a garden city.
Gwangju City, together with autonomous districts and business offices, has prepared this special policy with the aim of creating a pleasant and clean urban space with companies and citizens to improve the quality of life of citizens and enhance urban competitiveness, while also promoting the creation of unique spaces distinctive to Gwangju.
First, the city decided to maintain the areas around national rivers such as Gwangjucheon, Yeongsangang, and Hwangryonggang in cooperation with citizens. The Gwangju Environment Corporation and citizens will carry out activities such as planting seasonal flowers and maintaining flower beds along the rivers, as well as regularly inspecting environmental cleanup activities and surrounding facilities to provide citizens with a pleasant environment throughout the year.
Additionally, Gwangju City will work with the five autonomous districts to maintain 640 urban parks within the city. Tasks such as mowing and weeding, as well as maintenance of various convenience facilities, will be carried out regularly so that citizens can enjoy a pleasant park environment 365 days a year.
The Agricultural Technology Center will create ecological agricultural gardens in idle spaces within the city to build a garden city of Gwangju where nature and rest coexist.
Comprehensive maintenance and management of facilities managed by the city will also be promoted. Ahead of the 42nd anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, inspections and maintenance of May 18 historical sites and related facilities will be conducted.
Furthermore, overall environmental improvements will be made to senior citizen facilities such as Bitgoeul and Hyoryeong Senior Towns, youth training facilities, municipal libraries, and aging industrial complexes such as Bonchon and Cheomdan.
The autonomous districts will actively participate in "Creating a Clean, Beautiful, and Distinctive Gwangju."
Dong-gu will create walkable streets through signboard improvements. Seo-gu will promote urban maintenance projects to create a beautiful urban street environment, and Nam-gu plans to drastically improve the day and night scenery of Baegun Square. Buk-gu, where the May 18 National Cemetery is located, will promote a clean worship environment ahead of the 42nd anniversary event, and Gwangsan-gu will provide citizens with pleasant urban spaces through projects such as the Sangmu-daero landscape improvement project.
Along with this, the city plans to create a beautiful and attractive Gwangju community by revitalizing resident-led village creation projects and resident autonomy councils. Excellent cases such as creating alley trails (Dong-gu) and the Nongseonggol mural (Seo-gu) will be shared, and support will be provided so that various projects suitable for each village’s situation can be promoted.
Moon Young-hoon, Acting Mayor of Gwangju, said, “We have decided to promote ‘Creating a Clean, Beautiful, and Distinctive Gwangju’ as a special policy so that Gwangju can become a garden city where citizens can feel pleasantness in their daily lives.” He added, “While the government’s efforts are important in creating such a garden city, it is only possible with the participation of the private sector, including companies, shops, neighborhoods, and households, who want to beautify their surroundings. Therefore, we will double the results in the future through cooperative governance between the public and private sectors.”
