[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Son Seon-hee] The new government, set to launch next month, has identified 'real estate normalization' as the top short-term policy priority.
According to the KDI public opinion survey on 'Priority Policy Tasks for the New Government,' released by the Korea Development Institute (KDI) on the 20th, 23.3% of the general public pointed to 'real estate normalization' as the key short-term policy for the new administration. This was followed by boosting economic vitality (13.0%), creating quality jobs (12.9%), and balanced regional development and revitalization of local economies (11.8%).
To normalize the real estate market, the majority opinion was that measures such as 'normalizing the housing rental market and activating public and private rental housing' and 'preventing speculative housing purchases by foreigners' should be prioritized.
In a survey conducted mainly among economic experts, 'boosting economic vitality' (24.3%) was selected as the top short-term policy task. This was followed by real estate normalization (20.7%), creating quality jobs (13.4%), and balanced regional development and revitalization of local economies (11.5%).
Specific measures to boost economic vitality included 'job creation' and 'regulatory innovation and improvement of the business environment.' It was suggested that establishing a fair economic environment is most important to create good jobs.
Regarding the top national policy goal that the new government should pursue on a broader scale, both economic experts and the general public identified 'enhancing national competitiveness through economic growth' (economic experts 46.9%, general public 29.2%). Economic experts also highlighted 'balanced development and strengthening social integration' (32.2%) as an important task, while the general public emphasized 'improving quality of life through expanded welfare' (22.0%).
While all age groups over 30 identified 'enhancing national competitiveness' as the highest national policy goal, those in their 20s uniquely responded with 'expanded welfare' (29.5%) and 'fair competition' (23.8%) as their priorities. Song In-ho, director of the KDI Economic Information Center, stated, "Targeted policy execution for those in their 20s requires separate consideration."
For mid- to long-term policy directions that the new government should pursue, both economic experts and the general public selected 'economic growth and distribution.' Additionally, in the fields of diplomacy and security, economic experts identified 'strengthening the Korea-US comprehensive strategic alliance' as a key task, while the general public urged 'nurturing a strong AI science and technology force.'
This survey was conducted last month using a self-administered web survey method targeting 518 economic experts (March 17-18) and 1,000 general public respondents (March 17-21). The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
