[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] The Presidential Transition Committee announced on the 20th that it will develop post offices into institutions providing various citizen-centered services.

Kim Ki-heung, deputy spokesperson of the Transition Committee, said at a briefing held at the Transition Committee press conference hall in Tongui-dong, Seoul, this morning, "We plan to provide four major citizen-centered postal services in consultation with the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Post."

The Transition Committee plans to provide public services through approximately 43,000 postal workers and 3,380 post offices nationwide, including ▲ visiting welfare and administrative services ▲ financial hub ▲ Korea Mom Insurance ▲ and regional public functions.

First, a visiting welfare and administrative service model centered on post offices will be established. The aim is to share the heavy welfare and administrative service delivery tasks with local governments and provide high-quality services that citizens can feel. A 'welfare registered mail service,' in which postal workers deliver basic information to households suspected to be in welfare blind spots upon request from local governments, will be piloted this year, and it will later be developed into a service that can support verifying the situation of the households.

They also plan to introduce the so-called 'Post Office Financial Hub Service,' where customers can receive commercial bank services at post office counters nationwide. Deputy Spokesperson Kim explained, "In the current situation where bank branches are decreasing, by integrating commercial bank services at post office financial counters, we expect to greatly improve convenience for local residents and the elderly." Discussions with major banks are underway, and the service is planned to launch as early as the end of this year.

Additionally, 'Korea Mom Insurance,' an insurance product covering risks related to pregnancy complications, will be designed this year and launched next year. This insurance supports diagnosis fees for pregnancy-related diseases of mothers and rare diseases of children, with the entire premium to be borne by the post office.

The post office will be transformed to perform various public functions such as culture, startups, and childcare services, and about 400 old post offices nationwide that require reconstruction will be redeveloped into multifunctional national facilities reflecting local history and cultural characteristics. The reconstruction of post offices will use internal resources so that there will be no tax burden on the public.
