[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] In the upcoming June 1 local elections, a virtual head-to-head poll shows that former Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Kim Dong-yeon, running as a preliminary candidate for the Democratic Party of Korea, and Representative Kim Eun-hye, a preliminary candidate for the People Power Party, are likely to have a close race within the margin of error.
On the 20th, polling firm Realmeter conducted a virtual two-person race survey commissioned by OhmyNews from the 18th to 19th targeting 812 men and women aged 18 or older residing in Gyeonggi Province (response rate 5.8%). The results showed that 43.1% of respondents said they would vote for Representative Kim, while 42.7% said they would vote for former Deputy Prime Minister Kim. The gap between the two candidates was 0.4 percentage points, within the margin of error.
The gap narrowed compared to a week earlier when the same organization (commissioned by MBN on the 11th-12th) found Representative Kim at 43.2% and former Deputy Prime Minister Kim at 41.4%, a difference of 1.8 percentage points.
In a hypothetical race between former Deputy Prime Minister Kim and former Representative Yoo Seung-min, Kim led outside the margin of error. In this matchup, former Representative Yoo received 36.2% support, while former Deputy Prime Minister Kim received 40.6%, a gap of 4.4 percentage points. However, compared to a survey conducted a week earlier (7.7 percentage points), the gap has somewhat narrowed.
In the Democratic Party’s candidate suitability survey, former Deputy Prime Minister Kim ranked highest with 35.5%, followed by Representative Ahn Min-seok at 11.6%, former Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young at 9.9%, and Representative Cho Jung-sik at 4.8%.
Within the People Power Party, former Representative Yoo led Representative Kim within the margin of error.
In the previous survey, Representative Kim held a narrow lead within the margin of error, but in this survey, former Representative Yoo recorded 35.1% and Representative Kim 34.1%, showing a close race within the margin of error.
In a multi-candidate race involving both parties, Representative Kim led with 27.1%, followed by former Deputy Prime Minister Kim at 22.6%, former Representative Yoo at 18.2%, Representative Ahn at 7.5%, and former Mayor Yeom at 7.0%.
The sampling error of this survey is ±3.4 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. For more details, please refer to the Central Election Survey Deliberation Commission or the Realmeter website.
