[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Kumho Tire announced on the 20th that it will carry out climate environment education activities called 'Green Campaigner' in collaboration with the Green Umbrella Children’s Foundation in the first half of this year.

This program educates children using the Green Umbrella Children’s Foundation’s climate environment education content to help them understand the knowledge and capabilities required as climate citizens, and to cultivate a proper awareness and attitude regarding the rights and responsibilities of climate citizens.

Professional educators conduct face-to-face classes, and courses are also available online. The education consists of four sessions, each lasting 40 minutes. In the first and second sessions, participants learn about various phenomena, causes, and the severity of the climate crisis. They also study the current status of child rights violations and the situation of climate refugees, followed by a time to pledge actions to respond to the climate crisis. In the third and fourth sessions, children plan their own actions according to the principles of climate crisis resolution campaigns, prepare materials, and carry out the campaigns.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has projected that by 2030, compared to a scenario without climate change, the number of deaths from diarrheal diseases among children under 15 will increase by 48,000. Child deaths due to malnutrition are expected to rise by approximately 95,000. This education aims to raise awareness of climate issues among children, who are vulnerable to climate change and future key actors, encouraging them to engage in environmental protection activities as climate citizens.

Fourteen elementary schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province are participating in this activity. It is expected that about 1,000 children will become Green Campaigners. Children who complete the program have demonstrated their creativity as Green Campaigners through activities such as ▲online poster creation ▲tumbler design contests ▲drawing beautiful earth floor paintings ▲promoting climate crisis awareness on the way to school ▲signing petitions to reduce food waste in cafeterias.

Kang Jin-gu, Head of Management Support Team at Kumho Tire, said, "This education was planned to participate in efforts toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of 'Quality Education for All' and 'Reducing All Forms of Inequality.' Kumho Tire will support children to grow as climate citizens who envision a healthy present and future."

As part of its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, Kumho Tire signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Education in 2012. Since then, it has operated various educational donation activities targeting children and youth over the past decade, including youth career experience programs, children’s traffic safety education, motorsports experience activities, and school violence prevention education.
