[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] BGF Retail announced on the 20th that it is participating in the desertification prevention project 'Paperless' campaign along with the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute, BC Card, and others, and will additionally establish a 25ha (hectare) windbreak forest.
The Paperless campaign aims to reduce paper usage by selectively printing paper receipts, which have been routinely issued during the payment process, according to the customer's choice. The cost saved from issuing paper receipts is accumulated into an environmental fund and used for environmental protection projects.
Since 2012, participating companies have accumulated an environmental fund worth 3.9 billion KRW through the Paperless campaign and have planted a total of 490,000 trees in major desertification areas in Northeast Asia, including Mongolia and China. The planted trees have created a 230ha windbreak forest, equivalent to the size of Yeouido, in areas such as the Kubuqi Desert and Uginorsom, known as the sources of yellow dust damage in Korea.
A BGF Retail official said, “The receipts saved by nationwide CU franchise owners and customers who love the environment are greatly contributing to preventing global desertification and reducing carbon emissions,” adding, “We will continue to discover and implement ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management models.”
