[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the Korea Youth Policy Institute, and the Korea Youth Activity Promotion Agency will hold a policy forum on the afternoon of the 20th to share cases of metaverse (extended virtual world) youth activities and explore ways to expand them.

The forum will be broadcast live online through the Korea Youth Policy Institute's YouTube channel and is open to anyone. In the case presentations, they will share examples such as the establishment of a metaverse children's science museum, the use of metaverse in the Hanam-type future school (Kkumtree), and metaverse youth activities at national training facilities.

Gye Bo-kyung, Deputy Director of the Korea Education and Research Information Service, who is in charge of the keynote presentation, emphasizes the need to develop educational metaverse platforms that can overcome the limitations and constraints of metaverses currently developed for commercial purposes. She suggests efforts to appropriately address ethical issues in virtual worlds along with the development of diverse teaching and learning content.

In the comprehensive discussion, chaired by Ha Hyeong-seok, Head of Planning and Coordination at the Korea Youth Policy Institute, youth field and academic experts will participate as discussants to discuss practical methods to expand youth activity areas into virtual spaces and promote a paradigm shift in youth activities.

Yoon Yeo-sung, Director of the Cheonan Taejosan Training Center, will introduce the experience of communication while preparing the ‘Metaverse Entrance Ceremony’ together with the training center, the education office, and schools in February, and propose the need to strengthen expertise so that training facilities and schools can operate programs in connection.

Kim Ga-eun, Senior Researcher at the Science and Technology Policy Institute, will discuss ways to expand the advantages of the metaverse by utilizing immersive equipment such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), deep machine learning (deep learning) technologies, and also address side effects when youth activities spread in a non-face-to-face environment.

Kim Kwon-young, Youth Policy Officer at the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, said, “COVID-19 is accelerating digital transformation, making it necessary to prepare for changes in the social environment surrounding youth. I hope this will be a time to consider ways to shift the paradigm of youth activities more effectively in response to the new policy environment through various utilization cases.”
