Joseph Kahn Appointed New Editor-in-Chief of The New York Times

[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Seulgina Jo] Dean Baekei, the first Black editor-in-chief of the New York Times (NYT), will step down in June, and Joseph Khan, the deputy managing editor, will be promoted to editor-in-chief.

According to the NYT on the 19th (local time), Khan was confirmed as the successor to Baekei, who has led the NYT newsroom for the past eight years. Publisher A.G. Sulzberger said in a message to employees that "this decision will come as no surprise to many people, especially those who have worked with Joe (Joseph Khan)," and praised him as "an outstanding journalist and a courageous, principled leader."

Khan, a multiple Pulitzer Prize winner, is a former Wall Street Journal (WSJ) China correspondent and has served as NYT’s industry reporter, Beijing bureau chief, and international news desk editor.

Meanwhile, Baekei, who is retiring from the editor-in-chief position upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65, is expected to remain with the newspaper in a new role, Sulzberger confirmed.
