[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Seogwipo Maritime Police Station announced on the 19th that it will conduct a ‘Free Inspection Service for Powered Water Leisure Equipment’ at Unjin Port in Daejeong-eup (on the 28th) and Hayang Port in Hayang-dong (on the 29th) to prevent accidents caused by equipment failure of powered water leisure devices.
In the past three years, a total of 144 water leisure accidents have been reported to Seogwipo Maritime Police, of which 83 cases (57.6%) were types of accidents such as engine failure and drifting accidents that could have been prevented through pre-departure safety inspections.
This inspection is organized by Seogwipo Maritime Police in collaboration with the Korea Maritime Safety Authority (KOMSA) and local specialized repair companies, providing equipment checks such as engine oil, fuel filters, and coolant, as well as education and consultation on equipment management methods and leisure activity-related laws.
The free inspection will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the 28th and 29th respectively, with both prior reservations and on-site applications on the day available.
Seogwipo Maritime Police will also carry out a safety culture promotion campaign by distributing promotional items such as waterproof packs, wet tissues, and accident prevention leaflets to leisure equipment owners.
A Seogwipo Maritime Police official said, “Drifting accidents have a high likelihood of leading to major accidents such as capsizing and collisions, so it is necessary to make it a habit to inspect water leisure equipment before departure,” and added, “We ask that safety rules be strictly followed, including wearing safety equipment during leisure activities.”
