[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Yeosu Maritime Police Station announced on the 19th that "According to the analysis of marine accidents in the first quarter, a total of 52 vessel accidents occurred, but the six major marine accidents with high casualties (collision, grounding, capsizing, fire, flooding, sinking) decreased."
According to Yeosu Maritime Police, a total of 52 vessel accidents occurred in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 8 vessels compared to the same period last year, with an average of 17.3 vessels per month, but fortunately, no casualties occurred.
In addition, the six major marine accidents with a high possibility of casualties (collision, grounding, capsizing, fire, flooding, sinking) totaled 23 vessels in the first quarter, showing a decrease of 7 vessels compared to last year.
By cause of accident, accidents due to human factors such as operational negligence and poor maintenance accounted for 41 vessels, making up 78.8% of all marine accidents in the first quarter.
By type of vessel, fishing boats accounted for 26 vessels (50%), cargo ships and tankers 9 vessels (17.3%), leisure equipment 8 vessels (15.4%), fishing charter boats 4 vessels (7.7%), and others 5 vessels (9.6%), with fishing boat accidents making up the majority.
The Maritime Police plans to strengthen patrols in accident-prone waters under its jurisdiction to prevent marine accidents and implement the "Disaster Relief Risk Forecast System" for proactive marine accident prevention.
A Yeosu Maritime Police official said, "We will check the status of accident preparedness and response through quarterly marine accident analysis and strengthen safety awareness, including compliance with safety rules by marine workers, to effectively prevent marine accidents."
