[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] LG CNS announced on the 19th that it has recently started developing the ‘Intelligent Platform for Advanced Unmanned Automated Agricultural Production Demonstration Complex,’ promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Jeollanam-do.

This project aims to create a data-centered ‘Intelligent Smart Farm’ on a 54.3-hectare (543,000㎡, 1.6 million pyeong) open field in Naju-si, Jeollanam-do by 2023. This area is equivalent to 76 times the size of a soccer field. An open field refers to land not covered by a roof, such as paddy fields and dry fields without installed facilities in agriculture.

LG CNS is developing a ‘Smart Farm Intelligent Platform’ that integrates management of all farming processes. The Smart Farm Intelligent Platform collects various data necessary for farming, such as crop growth status, soil, weather, temperature and humidity, and pest outbreak periods, and analyzes them with artificial intelligence (AI) to provide optimal farming guidance.

For example, in potato farming, it analyzes soil data and potato growth data to inform the appropriate amount and timing of fertilizer supply. It also guides the optimal watering schedule based on soil moisture levels and weather forecasts. Depending on the scale of the open field, thousands to tens of thousands of IoT sensors and devices are installed in the paddy and dry fields to monitor all growth processes of crops from sowing to harvest and collect various environmental data.

LG CNS defends crops with a ‘Digital Scarecrow.’ The Digital Scarecrow is a pest control device equipped with AI image sensors, radar, speakers, and lasers. It detects movement using radar and determines the presence of harmful animals with AI image sensors. Then, it protects crops by firing lasers or emitting frequencies that animals avoid through speakers.

The Smart Farm Intelligent Platform also provides management services for unmanned agricultural machinery such as unmanned tractors, unmanned drones, and unmanned rice transplanters. The platform allows users to monitor the status of machinery, including fuel levels and malfunctions, at a glance and manage work schedules. Through a remote system, agricultural machinery can be operated safely without physically going to the paddy or dry fields.

Through this project, LG CNS plans to standardize agricultural data collection items, units, and methods to establish the foundation for digital precision agriculture. When data-driven precision agriculture is realized, it will be possible to determine the exact harvest time that yields the highest quality and maximum output by calculating accumulated temperature (the amount of heat required for crop growth), optimal moisture content, and weather forecast data.

LG CNS is building the platform based on its proprietary smart city platform ‘CityHub.’ The IoT platform ‘InfIoT’ is used for data collection, and the AI big data platform ‘DAP MLDL’ is utilized for data analysis and prediction.

LG CNS plans to expand the project by establishing apartment-type smart farms, rooftop smart farms, and advanced glass greenhouses in ‘Sejong Smart City,’ Korea’s first national pilot city.

Yoo Insang, Executive Director of LG CNS Smart SOC Division, emphasized, “We will focus LG CNS’s DX expertise to make the Korean-style smart farm a global leading model.”
