[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Kyobo Life Insurance announced on the 18th that it will sell messenger bags made by upcycling discarded materials from the Gwanghwamun billboard at Kyobo Hottracks until the 28th.
Upcycling is a combination of "upgrade" and "recycling," referring to the creation of new products by utilizing discarded waste materials. Unlike recycling, it is sometimes called "new utilization" because it increases value.
The messenger bags were produced in collaboration with the global upcycling brand Nukak. These bags, made by reprocessing discarded banners from the Gwanghwamun billboard, each have unique shapes due to the nature of the materials. The colors also vary. According to the company, this makes them "one-of-a-kind bags in the world."
The bag straps were made using car seat belts. All materials used in the bags underwent strict quality and process management, including cleaning and sterilization.
Kyobo Life Insurance emphasized that it aimed to deliver value consumption more authentically to the MZ generation. The MZ generation, born between the 1980s and early 2000s, tends to prioritize social impact and prefers to purchase products from socially responsible companies.
The messenger bags not only embody eco-friendly values but also offer various functions. The outer fabric is made of 100% waterproof material. The size accommodates a tablet PC and a 15-inch laptop, making it suitable for daily use. Additionally, key holders and various storage compartments enhance convenience.
All proceeds from the sale of the messenger bags will be donated to environmental organizations. The donations will be used to create school forests within elementary schools in Korea.
A Kyobo Life Insurance official said, "The Gwanghwamun billboard has been reborn as a sustainable upcycling product," adding, "We will do our best to create a path where good consumption for the planet leads to donations, spreading positive influence."
