[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Scholarship Foundation announced on the 18th that it will expand the support amount and scope of the Seoul Hope University Scholarship program to minimize the tuition burden for university students.

The Seoul Hope University Scholarship is a scholarship program aimed at alleviating the tuition burden for university students by providing scholarships for a portion of the actual tuition paid. This year, the recruitment scale is about 3 billion KRW.

Starting this year, to minimize the tuition burden for university students in Seoul, the support amount will be increased from a maximum of 2 million KRW per year to 3 million KRW (up to 1.5 million KRW per semester), and for the first time, the support scope will be expanded to include not only students in regular education programs but also those in extended semester programs.

The scholarship application requirements are △ currently enrolled in a university located in Seoul or a non-Seoul university student who is a Seoul citizen or a family member of a Seoul citizen △ actual tuition payment of 500,000 KRW or more for the first semester of 2022 △ meeting income criteria as a basic livelihood security recipient or legally designated low-income class, or falling within the 4th income bracket or below for the 2022 first semester Korea Student Aid Foundation financial aid.

Selected scholarship recipients can receive differentiated scholarship amounts (fixed support of 500,000 KRW, 1,000,000 KRW, or 1,500,000 KRW per semester) based on the actual tuition paid within the tuition range. However, applicants should note that tuition support scholarships cannot exceed the tuition amount when combined with all other on-campus and off-campus scholarships.

The Seoul Hope University Scholarship can be applied for individually online through the Seoul Scholarship Foundation website from 10:00 AM on April 29 to 5:00 PM on May 11.

Lee Dae-hyun, Acting Chairman, stated, “We aim to expand university tuition support so that students can focus on their studies without interruption or being overwhelmed by difficult daily life,” and added, “We will continue to pursue practical expansion measures to further reduce university students’ academic expenses in response to changes in the school-age population and other environmental changes.”
