[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Nayeon] The last of the Asiatic black bears that escaped from a breeding farm in Idong-eup, Yongin, Gyeonggi Province last November was captured and euthanized in a nearby mountain about 9 km from the farm after five months.

On the 17th, Yongin City received a report from a resident around 5:35 a.m. about a sighting of an Asiatic black bear near the Kia Training Center in Pyeongchang-ri, Yangji-myeon.

Subsequently, a damage prevention team was dispatched, and the bear was captured around 9:10 a.m.

The bear was found close to residential areas. The city decided to euthanize the bear, judging that it could pose a threat to residents and hikers.

The bear euthanized that day was the last of the five Asiatic black bears that escaped from the breeding farm in Idong-eup last November and had not yet been captured.

Among the escaped group, three bears were found on the same day; two were captured alive and one was euthanized. One bear found the next day was also euthanized.

The authorities had been unable to locate the remaining bear until the 28th of last month, four months later, when it was spotted on a mountain behind Yejik Village in Hodong, Cheoin-gu, Yongin City. A capture operation was attempted but failed.

With the capture of the last remaining bear that day, the operation to capture the bears that escaped from the breeding farm was concluded after five months.
