[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Nayeon] A man in his 40s who drove a "daepocha" (unregistered vehicle) in Jeju and fled after colliding with a parked car was caught about a month later.

On the 17th, according to Seogwipo Police Station, Mr. A was apprehended on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act (hit-and-run) in Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo.

Mr. A is accused of driving a daepocha in Seongsan-eup on March 7 and fleeing after colliding with a parked vehicle.

Through investigation, the police confirmed that Mr. A’s vehicle was an illegal unregistered vehicle (mujokcharyang) and succeeded in arresting him after tracking and surveillance, seizing the vehicle.

It was revealed that Mr. A had been operating the mujukcharyang for about five years since 2017.

The police have booked Mr. A on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act and the Automobile Management Act and are conducting further investigations.

According to Articles 5 and 80 of the Automobile Management Act, operating a vehicle without registration can result in imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of up to 20 million won.

The Traffic Crime Investigation Team of Seogwipo Police Station stated, "Mujokcharyang vehicles have a high potential for misuse in various crimes and cannot be checked through computer systems, making it difficult to identify suspects in emergencies. We will continue to track such vehicles to ensure their capture."
