The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on the 17th, there were 93,001 new confirmed cases. This is 71,000 fewer than the 164,481 cases reported a week earlier on the 10th. The number of critically ill patients was 893, and there were 203 additional deaths. The number of critically ill patients fell to the 800s for the first time in 42 days.
Of the new confirmed cases, 92,983 were domestic infections and 18 were imported cases. By region, domestic cases were reported as follows: Seoul 14,805, Busan 3,375, Daegu 4,210, Incheon 4,874, Gwangju 3,559, Daejeon 3,558, Ulsan 2,018, Sejong 755, Gyeonggi 23,117, Gangwon 3,113, Chungbuk 3,558, Chungnam 5,451, Jeonbuk 4,158, Jeonnam 4,395, Gyeongbuk 5,053, Gyeongnam 5,516, and Jeju 1,468.
The number of COVID-19 deaths increased by 203, bringing the total to 21,092 (fatality rate 0.13%). The number of critically ill patients currently hospitalized was 893, a decrease of 20 from the previous day.
The nationwide intensive care bed occupancy rate was 46.9% (1,326 out of 2,825 beds in use), down 1.6 percentage points from the previous day’s 48.5%. The occupancy rate for semi-intensive care beds, which treat patients whose condition is improving from critical or who are at high risk of worsening, was 49.9%. The number of patients receiving home treatment was 834,058, a decrease of 33,868 from the previous day’s 867,926.
The number of COVID-19 deaths was 203, down 70 from the previous day’s 273. The number of deaths over the past week was 258-171-184-318-264-273-203. The cumulative death toll reached 21,092, with a cumulative fatality rate of 0.13%.
Regarding the infection routes of new confirmed cases, 92,983 were domestic and 18 were imported. Among domestic cases, 23,117 were in Gyeonggi, 14,805 in Seoul, and 4,874 in Incheon, with the metropolitan area accounting for 51,204 cases (46%).
From the 11th to the 17th, the daily new confirmed cases were 90,917 → 210,732 → 195,397 → 148,431 → 125,846 → 107,916 → 93,001, averaging about 138,891 cases per day.
The COVID-19 vaccination completion rate (percentage of people who have completed the basic vaccination) was 86.8% (a cumulative total of 44,526,471 people) as of midnight on the day. The third dose vaccination rate was 64.3% of the total population (a cumulative total of 33,008,629 people). The vaccination rate for children aged 5 to 11 was 1%.
