[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] On the 14th, Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do held a judging committee meeting at the large conference room of Damyang-gun Office and announced on the 15th the selection of recipients for the Damyang Citizen Award and Damyang Honorary Citizen Certificate.
This year, the grand prize for the Damyang Citizen Award in the regional development category was awarded to Lee Sang-nam, president of the Wolsan-myeon Euddeum Strawberry Association, while the encouragement awards went to Jeong Byeong-yeon, director of the Damyang Cultural Foundation (education and culture category), and Kim Geum-ju, a master craftsman (education and culture category). The special award was given to Cho Hyun-jong, director of the Gwangju Archaeological Research Institute.
The recipients of the 'Damyang Honorary Citizen Certificate' were Lee Chung-mi, CEO of Jinjja Nori Architects, and Kim Yang-rok, CEO of Isan Steel Co., Ltd.
Lee Sang-nam, the grand prize winner in the regional development category of the Damyang Citizen Award, is a leading farmer with 36 years of farming experience who proposed a new paradigm for local strawberry farming and voluntarily took on the role of a mentor for returning farmers, contributing to establishing an agricultural foundation where all local farmers can prosper together.
Jeong Byeong-yeon, the encouragement award winner in the education and culture category, contributed to revitalizing cultural city hub spaces such as Haedong Cultural Art Village, Humanities House, and Jeongmi Coffee Shop as the operator and manager of the old downtown cultural complex in Damyang-gun. He also served as a director of the Damyang Cultural Foundation, establishing policies for the development of local culture and arts and building a public-private cooperation system.
Kim Geum-ju, a master of traditional Damyang crafts, has participated as an instructor in sewing and making traditional Korean clothing at the Damyang Women's Cultural Center for about 16 years, dedicating efforts to the continuous preservation and succession of traditional clothing. She also operated a Hanbok experience program at the Hanok resting area within Juknokwon, contributing to promoting local and traditional culture.
Dr. Cho Hyun-jong, the special award winner in the education and culture category, has served as a standing committee member and editor-in-chief of the compilation committee for the 'Damyang-gunsa,' a record of Damyang's history commemorating the millennium of the Damyang place name since 2017, handling all practical tasks related to the compilation and contributing to the project.
Lee Chung-mi, selected as an honorary citizen, achieved remarkable success by winning the 'Excellence Award' at the 2021 Korea Remodeling Architecture Exhibition through architectural designs based on creative ideas for idle cultural facilities in Damyang-gun, helping to promote Damyang as a leading city in urban regeneration nationwide.
Additionally, Kim Yang-rok, selected as an honorary citizen, relocated his business from Gwangju to Damyang in 2013 and contributed to job creation in the region. He also led community giving by consistently donating and supplying materials free of charge for construction in nearby villages.
The county plans to hold an award ceremony to honor the recipients of the Damyang Citizen Award and Honorary Citizen Certificates at the '43rd Damyang Citizen Day Commemoration Ceremony' on May 3.
