[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Heo Seok, a prospective candidate for re-election as mayor of Suncheon, announced on the 15th that he has pledged cooperation with the Honam Regional Headquarters of the Railroad Workers' Union to enhance the public nature of railroads.

Suncheon is a key hub for railroad transportation, where the Jeolla Line high-speed rail project and the Gyeongjeon Line electrification project are being promoted simultaneously. Additionally, it is a city with many railroad workers, making this agreement particularly significant.

Heo Seok, the Democratic Party prospective candidate for mayor of Suncheon, signed a "Policy Agreement for the Public Development of Railroads" at the meeting room of the Honam Regional Headquarters of the Railroad Workers' Union (Head: Lee Haeng-seop).

The agreement signed by Heo Seok and Lee Haeng-seop, head of the Honam Regional Headquarters of the Railroad Workers' Union, contains a total of five agreements.

They promised to join forces to facilitate the early opening of the dedicated Jeolla Line high-speed rail and the introduction of KTX services to Suseo to help local residents use the railroad more conveniently.

They also agreed to jointly research and find concrete implementation plans to ensure that the Gyeongjeon Line electrification project, recently promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, does not cause any harm to the citizens of Suncheon.

Furthermore, they pledged to cooperate in ecologically utilizing the abandoned railroad sites and railroad cultural resources generated during the electrification process of the Gyeongjeon Line.

Finally, they promised to strive to build the nation's first Railroad Hall linked with the railroad cultural resources in the Jogok-dong area, which is being reborn as a railroad cultural village. This facility will include a railroad history museum, a railroad travel platform, railroad-related education and job experience programs, tourism promotion functions, and will be accessible to members of the Cheolwoohoe (Railroad Alumni Association).

Lee Haeng-seop, head of the Railroad Workers' Union, stated, "I support candidate Heo Seok, who has a strong will to execute the development of local railroad infrastructure, and I hope we continue to cooperate in the future."

Meanwhile, candidate Heo Seok is from Haeryong-myeon, Suncheon. He graduated from Suncheon High School and Seoul National University with a degree in economics. He has served as director of the Labor Issues Research Institute at Dawn, co-chairman of the Jeonnam joint election campaign for presidential candidate Moon Jae-in, among other roles. In the 2018 Suncheon mayoral election, he was the only Democratic Party mayoral candidate elected in the three cities of the eastern Jeonnam region and is currently serving as the mayor of Suncheon in the 7th term of direct election.
