[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Lee Jeong-seon, a preliminary candidate for Gwangju Superintendent of Education, emphasized on the 15th that “the 'Legislation to limit the number of students per class to 20 or fewer' must be implemented to normalize school education, which has been devastated by COVID-19, and to realize customized individualized education.”
The candidate said, “Education is about recognizing the uneven aspects of children's talents and guiding them to properly utilize their potential and strengths,” adding, “Competitive education no longer helps children's growth or the nation's future at all, and an environment must be created to provide personalized education based on diversity.”
He stated, “So far, the education authorities have invested astronomical budgets to build digital infrastructure and improve classroom environments, but the school field has not felt significant effectiveness,” and added, “Material support alone makes it difficult to approach the essence of education, and the most certain policy to create classrooms where teachers and children can face each other and engage in activities is to limit the number of students per class to 20 or fewer.”
He continued, “Economic approaches such as ‘reducing the number of teachers because the school-age population has decreased’ cannot guarantee the quality of education,” explaining, “On the contrary, the crisis of declining school-age population is a golden opportunity to dramatically improve the quality of education.”
The candidate said, “The 'Legislation to limit the number of students per class to 20 or fewer' is the way to normalize school education and guarantee conditions where teachers can care for each child one by one,” and added, “Considering the future of the Republic of Korea, the 'Legislation to limit the number of students per class to 20 or fewer' is not a choice but the most important education policy that must be implemented immediately.”
