[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Indonesia, the rotating chair country of the Group of Twenty (G20), announced that it has invited Russia to the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting to be held next week in Washington, USA.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, there have been increasing calls to expel Russia from the G20, but the chair country Indonesia has rejected this.
An official from the Indonesian Ministry of Finance said, "Russia's Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina have the right to attend the G20 meeting either in person or virtually," adding, "Indonesia, as the chair country, is not in a position to cancel any member country's invitation without consent." The official also added that they are discussing inviting Ukrainian officials to provide a session explaining the impact of the war at the G20 meeting.
If Russian Finance Minister Siluanov and Central Bank Governor Nabiullina attend the G20 meeting, attention will focus on how U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will respond.
Secretary Yellen stated during her appearance before the House Financial Services Committee on the 6th that she would not attend if Russian officials participate in the G20 meeting. The United States has argued that Russia should be expelled from the G20 following its invasion of Ukraine.
The G20 Summit is scheduled to be held in Bali, Indonesia, this coming November.
