[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] Comprehensive building materials company SWY announced on the 15th that it has signed a business agreement with Korea Western Power and others to develop an ‘industrial complex rooftop solar power’ project.
According to the company, under this agreement, it will carry out design, procurement, and construction (EPC) as well as maintenance through equity participation. The agreement parties, Korea Western Power and NexPower, will be responsible for maintenance and design, procurement, and construction (EPC), respectively. The solar EPC business is a one-stop service business that provides design, parts and materials procurement, and construction.
The three companies plan to start by installing a 20MW-class rooftop solar power plant in an industrial complex in the Chungcheong Province area and later expand the project to over 100MW-class nationwide industrial complexes.
SWY is recognized for its specialization in the rooftop solar business through its proprietary specialized product, ‘FL Roof (Fireproof no Leakage).’
By using SWY FL Roof, solar modules can be installed on rooftops without drilling holes. Notably, this product is characterized by using factory rooftops rather than natural environments such as fields or seas. It also has fireproof and waterproof functions.
An SWY official said, “This business agreement is significant in that the construction industry and public power companies are joining hands to install solar power on industrial complex rooftops, contributing not only to achieving government energy policies but also to the safety of industrial complexes through reinforcement of aging roofs. We will actively participate in the renewable energy expansion strategy and focus on discovering new markets and generating profits through greenhouse gas reduction.”
A Korea Western Power official stated, “We will continuously develop solar power generation business models using industrial complexes and aging factory rooftops nationwide. We plan to promote expansion projects through collaboration with specialized companies like SWY.”
The event was attended by Korea Western Power Vice President Kim Sungkyun, SWY CEO Jeon Pyeongyeol, and NexPower CEO Park Yongseop.
Meanwhile, with the government’s ‘2050 Carbon Neutral Roadmap (reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by more than 96% by 2050)’ and companies’ ‘RE100 Campaign (commitment to 100% renewable energy use for electricity consumption)’ spreading, the expansion of rooftop solar power projects on factory roofs is expected to accelerate.
According to the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, the potential power generation capacity of factory rooftops in over 1,000 industrial complexes nationwide is estimated at 5GW annually. The industry expects a construction market worth about 7 trillion KRW to open.
