[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] Police have urgently arrested a suspect who set fire to buildings in Singil and Yeongdeungpo overnight. The fire resulted in 1 death and 1 injury.
On the 15th, the Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul announced that they have urgently arrested a man in his 30s, Mr. A, on charges of arson causing death in an occupied building, and are investigating the motive behind the crime.
Earlier that day, at around 3:23 a.m., a fire broke out on the first floor of a four-story commercial building in Yeongdeungpo-dong, Seoul, and was extinguished after an hour and a half. A man in his 60s on the third floor died, and a woman in her 70s who was rescued from the fourth floor is receiving hospital treatment after inhaling smoke. It is also reported that one firefighter was injured during the fire suppression process.
It was confirmed that Mr. A also set fire in Singil-dong around 11 p.m. the previous day. The police stated that they plan to conduct a joint on-site investigation at both locations in the morning.
Based on residents' reports of a loud explosion and large flames, the police investigated nearby CCTV footage, captured evidence of the suspect setting the fire, and began tracking him.
Mr. A admitted to setting the fire, and the police plan to apply for an arrest warrant after investigating the circumstances of the arson.
