[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] A man in his 30s who set fire to a four-story commercial building in Seoul was arrested by the police.
The Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul announced on the 15th that they had urgently arrested a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, on charges of arson causing death in an occupied building.
According to the police, Mr. A is suspected of setting fire to a four-story building located in Yeongdeungpo-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, at around 3:24 a.m. on the 15th.
Mr. A reportedly admitted to starting the fire, and the police tracked and apprehended him after reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.
A police official stated, "We plan to investigate the relationship between the suspect and the owner of the commercial building, as well as the motive behind the crime."
Meanwhile, the fire resulted in the death of a man in his 60s who was on the third floor, and a woman in her 70s on the fourth floor was hospitalized after inhaling smoke. One firefighter sustained minor injuries during the fire suppression efforts.
The commercial building was completely burned from the first to the second floor, while the third and fourth floors suffered partial smoke damage. The fire department deployed 120 firefighters and 33 pieces of equipment, and fully extinguished the fire at around 4:59 a.m., 1 hour and 35 minutes after the fire broke out.
The fire authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the fire.
