[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Pohang City held the "Final Report Meeting on the Basic Plan Establishment Research Service for the Creation of Homigot Peninsula National Marine Garden" in the city hall conference room and presented a plan to develop Homigot Peninsula into a marine ecological, cultural, and tourism hub city on the East Coast.

In response to international trends aimed at preserving marine ecosystems due to climate change and carbon neutrality, the city, together with the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), Key Site Architecture, and Shinhan University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, has been conducting a research service since April last year to establish a national marine garden to preserve the ecosystem of Homigot Peninsula, the easternmost tip of the Korean Peninsula, which is a treasure trove of various marine biological resources including coastal terraces and rocky ecosystems with outstanding landscape value.

The final plan includes measures such as creating an integrated management model following the designation of the marine protected area around Homigot in December last year, implementing marine ecological experience and learning as well as marine healing hubs, and establishing a residential environment that can restore and sustain significantly declining fishery resources led by local communities such as fishing cooperatives and haenyeo (female divers).

For each of the four towns and townships of Homigot Peninsula, the target area of the marine garden, the roles proposed are as follows: Guryongpo-eup as a space where humanities and history coexist, serving as the center for humanities and history exhibition and education on the East Coast; Donghae-myeon as the gateway to the marine garden with detailed facilities by region; Janggi-myeon as a healing space where the sea and forest harmonize; and Homigot-myeon as the ecological restoration center for the operation and management of the marine garden.

A city official stated, "The core of the marine garden creation project is to utilize it not only for simple protection and conservation of the Homigot Peninsula national marine ecosystem but also for ecosystem restoration, revitalizing the local economy, and creating jobs through its value," adding, "Collaboration among related departments and institutions is essential for the completion of this project."
