[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Joo Ki-hwan, former expert committee member of the Political, Judicial, and Administrative Subcommittee of the Presidential Transition Committee, has officially started his election campaign along with registering as a preliminary candidate for Gwangju mayor.
On the morning of the same day at 10 a.m., candidate Joo registered as a preliminary candidate at the Gwangju Metropolitan City Election Commission, submitted the necessary documents, and proceeded with his first schedule.
Candidate Joo plans to declare his candidacy next week and then pay respects at the National May 18th Democratic Cemetery.
Candidate Joo said, “I saw hope in this presidential election. I felt that public sentiment in the region is gradually changing. The 12.7% vote share shown by Gwangju citizens is a result that demonstrates the possibility that even conservative parties can gain support if they work hard in a competitive system instead of a one-party monopoly political structure.”
He continued, “At a time when political change in Gwangju is necessary, a person named Yoon Seok-yeol appeared and sparked the possibility that conservatives can also participate in the region. Since there is a responsibility to faithfully implement the development and pledges for Gwangju that President-elect Yoon intends to carry out, I have entered the mayoral race.”
He stated his purpose for running, saying, “I will create a Gwangju Metropolitan City that communicates with the central government and the ruling party through open administration, communicative administration, and citizen participation administration. As a political newcomer, I aim to open a new chapter of politics where the central government, Gwangju city, and citizens communicate in a triangular relationship.”
