[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu in northern Seoul, Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, and in southern Seoul, Jung Soon-gyun, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, and Park Sung-soo, Mayor of Songpa-gu, have been virtually confirmed as the sole candidates for the June 1 local elections.
Accordingly, among the 23 district mayors of Seoul affiliated with the Democratic Party, these five are highly likely to be confirmed as sole candidates.
Additionally, Kim Cheol-sik, a district council member of Yongsan, and Yang Jun-wook, former chairman of the Seoul Metropolitan Council from Gangdong, will also be interviewed as sole candidate nominees.
The Democratic Party’s 8th Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections Public Office Candidate Recommendation Management Committee announced that on the 17th, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., interviews for Seoul district mayor candidates will be held at the Seoul City Party Headquarters large conference room.

Accordingly, in Gangseo-gu, eight candidates are competing for one district mayor candidate position, showing a competition ratio of 8 to 1.
Notably, the districts where incumbent mayors will compete from the interview stage include Jung-gu, Gwangjin-gu, Seongbuk-gu, Eunpyeong-gu, Mapo-gu, Yangcheon-gu, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Geumcheon-gu, and Gwanak-gu, totaling nine districts.
The Democratic Party is known to combine the results of recent suitability polls and interview assessments for these multiple candidates and decide on whether to hold a primary immediately after the interviews.
Meanwhile, drawing attention is the fact that Kim In-ho, the current chairman of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, is running for Dongdaemun-gu mayor, and Yang Jun-wook, former chairman of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, is challenging for Gangdong-gu mayor in the 8th term following the 7th term.
