[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] On the 14th, the Gwangju Sports Council Sports Science Research Institute announced that it has launched the nation’s first ‘Sports Gene (DNA) Support Project.’

This project has been promoted in collaboration with the Department of Physiology at Chonnam National University Medical School since last year. The sports gene analysis is conducted by the medical school, while the on-site application is handled by the research institute.

The institute recently received final project approval from the Chonnam National University Institutional Review Board (IRB) under the ‘Bioethics and Safety Act’ and has begun full-scale collection of sports gene specimens.

Through this, they plan to analyze data on 23 representative sports genes and establish a scientific system that integrates the existing Sports Science Center’s ‘genetic phenotype (physical fitness measurement and evaluation)’ data with ‘genotype (DNA)’ data to discover new athletes, scientificize specialized training, and support injury recovery through conditioning assistance.

Prior to this, in December last year, the institute signed a business agreement with Gwangju Sports High School for sports science conditioning and scientific training support, physical fitness measurement and exercise prescription, sports science classes and career exploration education, and sports gene (DNA) analysis.

In particular, the support for sports gene (DNA) analysis for new students is the first of its kind among sports high schools nationwide, and it is expected to play a significant role in discovering new athletes and developing regional sports.

Kim Gwang-a, Acting President, said, “We will develop various projects in the field of sports science for athletes who will lead Gwangju sports.” He added, “We will do our best to be with the athletes anytime and anywhere, living up to the nation’s first and best reputation.”
