[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Gwangju Metropolitan City will implement the ‘Real-time Passport Application Waiting Notification Service’ starting in April to provide convenience to passport applicants.
The ‘Real-time Passport Application Waiting Notification Service’ was established to reduce citizens’ waiting times for passport applications and enhance convenience by enabling efficient use of time, in anticipation of a surge in overseas travel demand as expectations for a return to normal life increase following the easing of COVID-19 social distancing measures.
The real-time waiting status can be checked on the Gwangju city website under ‘Open Civil Complaints’ (Open Civil Complaints - Passport Information).
Accordingly, citizens planning to apply for a passport can easily check the number of people waiting in the civil service office in real time anytime and anywhere before visiting City Hall for their application.
Additionally, a ‘Waiting Number Notification Talk Service’ is provided through kiosks installed inside the civil service office. Instead of paper waiting tickets, applicants can select the service and enter their personal mobile phone number to receive notifications.
Since the waiting number can be checked in real time via KakaoTalk messages, it is expected to enable efficient use of time.
Gwangju City anticipates that once the notification talk service replaces paper waiting tickets, it will help reduce costs and address environmental issues.
Jung Young-hwa, Director of Innovation Communication Planning, said, “Following the government’s announcement on lifting quarantine for overseas arrivals, demand for overseas travel is increasing, and the number of passport issuances is also rising. We will continue to expand civil service by shortening waiting times through real-time waiting status notifications and waiting number notification talk services.”
