[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] Shin Sang-tae (71), former vice chairman, has been elected as the 37th chairman of the Korea Veterans Association (hereinafter referred to as Hyanggun). This is the first time in 70 years that a candidate who is a retired army captain, not a general officer, has been elected.
According to the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs on the 13th, in the 37th Hyanggun chairman election held via non-face-to-face electronic voting, Shin Sang-tae (71), a retired army captain, won a landslide victory with 252 votes out of 359, securing about 70.2% of the vote. The opposing candidate, Kim Jin-ho (81, ROTC Class 2, retired army general), the current chairman, received only 107 votes (29.8%), failing to secure re-election.
Born in 1951, the new chairman Shin is a graduate of the 6th class of the Army Officer Candidate School. He has served as a director of Hyanggun, the 27th and 28th chairman of the Seoul Veterans Association, and the 34th and 35th vice chairman of Hyanggun. He is currently known to be managing a small and medium-sized enterprise. Following his election, he will officially take office and lead Hyanggun for four years.
Hyanggun, composed of retired personnel, is the largest security organization in Korea with about 1.3 million regular members who pay dues.
