[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The U.S. government is entering discussions with major American defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin to strengthen military support for Ukraine.

On the 12th (local time), Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks announced, as reported by The New York Times (NYT), that "a closed-door meeting will be held on the 13th with representatives from eight defense companies including Lockheed Martin and Raytheon to discuss ways to enhance air defense systems, anti-ship missiles, and weapons support for Ukraine."

The meeting will seek solutions to potential issues such as continuous supply to Ukraine and replenishment of weapons stockpiles within the U.S. The NYT stated, "The Department of Defense hopes that defense companies will begin preparations for a prolonged Ukraine war."

Deputy Secretary Hicks said, "We are working with companies to identify weapons suitable for Ukraine's military capabilities and to establish ways to deliver those weapons quickly." However, she did not specify the weapon systems the U.S. plans to provide.

Military officials who requested anonymity told the NYT that "the Department of Defense plans to focus on five categories of weapons," emphasizing that strengthening Ukraine's air defense and its ability to intercept Russian fighter jets is the most urgent.

The Department of Defense is also considering expanding the supply of coastal defense weapons such as missiles capable of attacking Russian vessels, as well as anti-personnel weapons like Claymore mines, which are regarded as the most powerful type of landmine. Equipment for mine clearance and radars capable of tracking enemy positions are also under review.

The U.S. is currently reviewing additional support for basic weapons such as long-range weapons and artillery shells. Deputy Secretary Hicks stated, "We are continuously engaging in discussions with Ukraine and allied countries to find the best ways to provide the equipment Ukraine needs. Most of what Ukraine requires are basic weapons like shells and ammunition. We are also looking into long-range weapons requested by Ukraine."
