Jung Eui-sun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, has been selected as the greatest disruptive innovator in the global automotive industry. Attention was drawn to Chairman Jung's innovation, which is transforming Hyundai Motor Group into a ‘smart mobility solutions provider’ and redefining the mobility sector beyond the traditional automotive industry framework.
On the 12th (local time), the U.S. current affairs weekly Newsweek held the ‘World’s Greatest Auto Disruptors 2022’ awards ceremony at the New York World Trade Center and announced Chairman Jung as the recipient of the ‘Visionary of the Year’ award.

At the awards ceremony, Chairman Jung stated, "Mobility, as the term suggests, connects people to people and enables them to be together," emphasizing, "When we come together like this, humanity can achieve even greater things, and this is why Hyundai Motor Group continues to innovate." He added, "Hyundai Motor Group’s efforts to turn imagination into reality are ultimately aimed at humanity, and the evolution of mobility that Hyundai Motor Group will achieve will provide humanity with more valuable time and space," stressing, "We will always lead human-centered and eco-friendly disruptive innovation."
The Visionary of the Year award is given to industry leaders who will have a significant impact on the future of the automotive industry for more than 30 years. Newsweek selected Chairman Jung as the first recipient, citing his "immense contribution to the growth of Hyundai and Kia in the automotive industry," and evaluated that "under Chairman Jung’s leadership and bold vision for the future, Hyundai Motor Group is redefining the possibilities of mobility and providing humanity with ‘freedom of movement.’"
Chairman Jung also graced the cover of Newsweek’s special issue on disruptive innovators. Newsweek featured his innovative journey as the cover story, highlighting how he is boldly expanding the limits of mobility into new fields such as robotics, urban air mobility (UAM), and hydrogen energy solutions, beyond securing core competencies like electrification and autonomous driving in traditional automotive companies.

Chairman Jung’s journey to expand human mobility experiences and realize ultimate freedom of movement is regarded as redefining the role of the automotive industry and corporations beyond disruptive innovation.
Under Chairman Jung’s leadership, Hyundai Motor Group is leading market restructuring by consecutively launching the Ioniq 5, EV6, and GV60?all based on the dedicated electric vehicle platform E-GMP?and announcing concrete and practical electrification transition plans. Hyundai Motor plans to establish an EV lineup of more than 17 models by 2030, achieving global electric vehicle sales of 1.87 million units and a market share of 7%. Kia also aims to release more than two EV models annually until 2027, building a full lineup of 14 EV models and selling 1.2 million electric vehicles by 2030.
Commercialization of robotics is also accelerating. Chairman Jung previously unveiled the ‘Future Robotics’ vision, which aims to expand human mobility experiences and realize ultimate freedom of movement through metaverse mobility that combines robotics and the metaverse. Additionally, efforts are being intensified to expand mobility spaces into the sky with UAM and to secure the most innovative and safest fully autonomous driving technologies.
At this event, which awarded six categories, Hyundai Motor Group’s Architecture Development Center and Electrification Development Division won the ‘R&D Team of the Year’ and ‘Powertrain Evolution of the Year’ awards, respectively. Half of all awardees were from Hyundai Motor Group. Hyundai Motor Group stated that the awards received by these key developers of E-GMP and electric vehicle systems are significant as they recognize not only the products but also the electrification technology capabilities on a global scale.
Other winners included Jim Farley, CEO of Ford, who was named ‘Executive of the Year’; Alfonso Albaisa, Vice President of Nissan Design, who was named ‘Designer of the Year’; and the Land Rover brand, which won ‘Marketing Campaign of the Year.’
