[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] GreenPlus, a smart farm specialist company, announced on the 12th that it has signed a contract worth approximately 2.6 billion KRW (cumulative 7.4 billion KRW) for a youth smart farm tomato cultivation project in Nonsan, Chungnam.

The construction period for the new youth smart farm greenhouse is until December 31. The contract includes not only the construction but also maintenance after completion. The contract period is from January 1 next year to December 31, 2027, and can be renewed every five years.

Starting last year with contracts for tomatoes in Gimje, Jeonbuk (worth 3.3 billion KRW) and cucumbers in Sangju, Gyeongbuk (1.5 billion KRW), GreenPlus has now signed a total of three youth smart farm contracts including the Nonsan, Chungnam tomato project. The company expects sales exceeding 10 billion KRW through two additional youth smart farm constructions.

This year, the government is actively promoting digitalization in agriculture using 4th industrial revolution technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence (AI). The Rural Development Administration has selected 10 key tasks to implement digital agriculture in the field and plans to invest 87.8 billion KRW in the development and dissemination of digital agricultural technologies.

GreenPlus carries out smart farm construction using materials produced in its domestic production process and plans smart farms tailored to the client's needs considering the crops, cultivation area, and climate. This comprehensive consulting service is evaluated as suitable for the government's goal of fostering young farmers.

A GreenPlus official said, "With the recent growing interest of youth in smart farms, demand is expected to continuously increase," adding, "Through steady research and development, we will help young people challenging agriculture for the first time to achieve success."
