[Asia Economy Reporter Jo Gang-wook] Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) announced on the 12th that it held an opening ceremony for the Housing and Urban History Museum at the LH Land and Housing Museum in Jinju, Gyeongnam.

The opening ceremony was attended by LH President Kim Hyun-joon, Jinju Mayor Jo Gyu-il, National Jinju Museum Director Jang Sang-hoon, National Gimhae Museum Director Lee Jeong-geun, and heads of public institutions in Gyeongnam Innovation City.

The Housing and Urban History Museum is an exhibition hall where visitors can see the history of housing and cities in Korea over the past 70 years since the establishment of the Republic of Korea. LH has been promoting the establishment of the museum since 2020 and held this opening ceremony after more than two years of preparation.

At the opening ceremony, President Kim said, "Amid the ruins of the Korean War, we stood up again, built houses, created cities, and laid the foundation of the Republic of Korea," adding, "The long history of residential culture is well represented in the Housing and Urban History Museum."

Jinju Mayor Jo Gyu-il stated, "The opening of the Housing and Urban History Museum, where the history of the Republic of Korea can be seen at a glance, is significant in that it provides cultural service opportunities and a place for historical education to the citizens of Jinju."

With the opening of the Housing and Urban History Museum, the LH Land and Housing Museum has been reborn as a museum showcasing the history and culture of housing and cities from ancient times to the present.

The Housing and Urban History Museum is organized as a chronological exhibition showing the history of housing and cities in Korea over time and consists of a total of four exhibition zones.

Zone 1, themed "Houses Beyond Despair, Houses, Houses," exhibits various types of public housing supplied by the Korea Housing Corporation, such as reconstruction housing, revival housing, and hope housing, amid the severe housing shortage after the Korean War.

Zone 2, under the theme "Revolution of Houses, the Apartment Era," allows visitors to see the apartment revolution that led residential culture in the 1960s and 70s and the founding of the Korea Housing Corporation. Notably, it features the Mapo Apartment, the first complex-type apartment, the Hangang Mansion Apartment, the pioneer of medium-to-large apartments, and Banpo Apartment and Jamsil Apartment, which ushered in the Gangnam era.

Zone 3, themed "The Start of Korean-style New Towns," exhibits the history of new town construction in the 1980s and 90s to solve housing problems. It includes not only the first phase new towns but also the Kaesong Industrial Complex, industrial complexes, and free economic zones, which were driving forces for national growth, and also covers the founding of the Korea Land Corporation.

In the final Zone 4, themed "Inclusive Coexistence Cities," visitors can learn about various urban and residential cultures that emerged in the diversified society since the 2000s. It exhibits Sejong City and Innovation Cities, second and third phase new towns, urban regeneration, as well as various residential welfare projects, and includes information about the launch of LH.

The Housing and Urban History Museum is open from Monday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is free. In the future, LH plans to develop and operate museum viewing programs for citizens and students.
