[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gangneung City is promoting a project to establish a 'Smart Road Lighting Demonstration Platform' that provides appropriate warnings and on-site measures at traffic accident scenes through artificial intelligence.
Gangneung City announced on the 12th that it will invest a total of 30.8 billion KRW (24 billion KRW from the national government, 6.8 billion KRW from private funds) this year to carry out the "'Smart Road Lighting Platform Development and Demonstration Research Project," with an agreement to be signed in April, followed by design and construction.
The project aims to reduce social costs caused by traffic accidents by providing services in five major accident-prone areas (crosswalks, intersections, child protection zones, tunnel sections, and icy sections), as well as life safety services and disaster safety services.
By integrating sensors and ICT technology, a closed-circuit (CC) TV video platform will be established to recognize and assess information, then notify pedestrians and drivers of danger through information display devices (VMS, high-intensity lighting, speakers).
In residential and commercial dense areas, a crime safety solution will be built to provide necessary information through situation dissemination and immediate alerts when crimes occur.
Using IoT sensors that detect harmful substances, the system will immediately issue warnings in case of harmful substance leaks and provide services to prevent the spread of damage during disasters.
To demonstrate and advance the technology, core research outcomes will be field-tested throughout the city for one year.
The project will be carried out until April 2023 by the specialized institution, the Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement, and the lead research institute, the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology.
