[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] The long-awaited project in Pohang, Gyeongbuk, the construction of the ‘Yeongilman Bridge,’ is expected to become visible.
On the afternoon of the 11th, President-elect Yoon, who visited Pohang, reiterated his commitment to building the Yeongilman Bridge to enhance the East Coast logistics hub function and revitalize the tourism industry.
The Yeongilman Bridge is a large-scale national project with a total length of 18 km, connecting Donghae-myeon in Nam-gu and Heunghae-eup in Buk-gu along the 30.9 km section of the Donghae Expressway between Pohang and Yeongdeok, with a total project cost of 1.6189 trillion KRW.
This project was selected as one of the ‘Top 30 Leading Projects for Metropolitan Economic Zone Development’ in 2008, but during the 2013 negotiations between the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance regarding changes to the total project cost, only the expressway section between Pohang and Yeongdeok was confirmed, and the project has been on hold since then.
The construction of the Yeongilman Bridge, which had been stagnant for over 10 years, is expected to gain momentum with President-elect Yoon’s visit to the construction site.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “If the government takes the lead in constructing the Yeongilman Bridge, it will be a significant stepping stone for balanced national development and revitalization of the regional economy,” adding, “Pohang City will also prepare the optimal plan for the immediate implementation of the project and make every effort to ensure construction begins as soon as possible.”
