[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Nayeon] There are claims that Russian forces committed a mass massacre of civilians in Makariv, near Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.

According to foreign media such as CNN and dpa, Vadym Tokar, mayor of Makariv, stated in an interview with Ukraine's parliamentary TV on the 9th (local time) that "Russian forces killed 132 civilians in Makariv."

Makariv is located about 50 km west of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, and Russian forces had already occupied and then left the area.

Before the Russian invasion, about 15,000 residents lived there, but currently fewer than 1,000 remain.

Mayor Tokar said, "City officials are gathering bodies shot by Russian troops during the invasion in one place," and "most of the bodies were found in large mass graves."

Currently, almost all infrastructure in Makariv has been destroyed, and apartment complexes and hospitals have been bombed and damaged. It is reported that about 45% of the city was destroyed by Russian bombardment.

Meanwhile, the West, including the United States, strongly condemns the Russian invasion and is imposing severe economic sanctions. On the 7th (local time), the US Congress passed a bill banning imports of Russian energy and revoking most-favored-nation status in trade relations with Russia and Belarus.

The European Union (EU) also announced additional sanctions. Recently, the EU agreed to ban imports of Russian coal and prohibit Russian ships from entering ports within the region.
