[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kang Wooseok] The UK Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has officially recognized nine additional symptoms of COVID-19.

According to the UK BBC broadcast on the 4th (local time), the HSA added shortness of breath, fatigue or exhaustion, body aches, headache, sore throat, nasal congestion or runny nose, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and nausea or vomiting as new COVID-19 symptoms.

Until now, the HSA had recognized only three symptoms as COVID-19 symptoms: fever, persistent cough, and loss of taste or smell. However, some have argued that these symptoms are only part of the COVID-19 symptom spectrum, and in the UK, debates have continued over which signs should be officially recognized as COVID-19 symptoms.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and several countries including the United States have already recognized various other symptoms as COVID-19 symptoms.

Professor Tim Spector of King's College London expressed regarding the recent addition of COVID-19 symptoms, "I have been advocating for expanding the recognized symptoms of COVID-19 over the past two years, and it has only now changed."

Meanwhile, the total cumulative confirmed COVID-19 cases in the UK stand at 21,285,731, which is close to one-third of the population (approximately 68.5 million). The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 is 165,721.
